Production Culture

Initially, the economy of the city was structuralized in the predominance of the culture of the cotton and the agriculture of subsistence, having as main cultures the maize, the beans of rope, the white beans, rice and the cassava. With the population increase, the agricultural activity gains impulse and dynamism, appearing the necessity to program the production to take care of the necessities of consumption of the urban population. Another factor that contributed for the economic dynamism was the growth of the commercial relations with other cities, that not only provoked intensification of the necessity of increase of the production, but also of its diversification. With this, the city goes to search, through diverse implementos in the economy, one position in the regional and state space, having as product base the culture of the cotton ' ' kidney-of-boi' ' , that during its height (1695-1970), more than two centuries, it propitiated to this city much wealth and prominence in the state production. The economy turned around the production of the cotton, that as much offered work in the culture, as in the algodoeiras plants that if they had installed in the city. These plants used innumerable employees, and dinamizavam the commerce and the life of the population, until the decade of 1980.

The agricultural production was not restricted only to the culture of the cotton, being also produced as permanent cultures the banana, the coconut of the bay, the orange and the sleeve. E, as temporary cultures the rice, the potato candy, the sugar cane-of-sugar, beans, tobacco in leaf, watermelon, cassava and maize. In the cattle one, the bovine flock was distinguished that in 1974 exceeded fifty a thousand heads, thirty and three a thousand swines, fifteen a thousand ovinos and more than five a thousand goat ones. However, historically, always it was the culture of the cotton that if constituted in the main pillar of the local economy.
